Ingredients

The following ingredients have 4 Servings
  • Rice rava - 1 cup (For preparing rice rava see note below)
  • Tur dal - 1/4 cup
  • Grated coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Green chillies - 2-3
  • Salt
  • Water - 1-1.5 cup
  • Seasoning
  • Oil - 4 tblsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Urid dal - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Asafetida

Instruction

  • Soak the tur dal for half an hour in water.
  • After half an hour, coarsely grind the dal along with green chilli (or you can add the green chilli in the second step). I prefer to grind it along with tur dal as my family members do not like to bite the green chilly.
  • In a kadai, pour oil. When it becomes hot, add the mustard seeds.
  • When mustard seeds crackles, add urid dal. When it becomes brown in colour, add the curry leaves, asafoetida and tur /green chilly mix.
  • Add water, salt and bring to a boil. Add the coconut.
  • When it starts boiling, add the rava slowly and mix well. The mix will be like upma like consistency. Switch off the gas and allow to cool.
  • When it becomes cool, mix well again and make balls out of it. Either round shape or oblong shape that is normally done.
  • Place them in an idli cooker and steam it for 15-20minutes.
