- 1 1/2 lb (675 g) lean ground beef
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) olive oil
- 1 to 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) crushed red pepper flakes
- 3 onions, finely chopped
- 4 carrots, peeled and diced
- 4 stalks celery, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 can 5 1/2 oz (156 ml) tomato paste
- 2 cans 28 oz (796 ml) diced Italian tomatoes
- 2 cans 28 oz (796 ml) tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes with purée
- 2 cups (500 ml) beef broth
- 2 teaspoons (10 ml) dried oregano
- 2 to 3 cloves
