Ingredients

The following ingredients have 4 Servings
  • 1 1/8 cup(s) Crisco (only use Crisco) recipe says a "good" cup
  • 1 1/2 cup(s) sugar
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 1 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
  • 1 cup(s) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon(s) baking soda
  • 2 teaspoon(s) baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 3 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour (may need up to 4 cups), plus more for dusting

Instruction

  • Beat together the shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla with mixer.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk (a little at a time) to the creamed sugar mixture until completely mixed. The dough will be fairly sticky.
  • Generously flour board. Scoop out smaller portions of dough.
  • Pat out with your hand to 1/4"-1/2" thickness.
  • Flour cookie cutter, cut and place on ungreased cookie sheet. (I use a round jelly glass to cut out the cookies).
  • Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Do not over bake. Let cool a couple of minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  • NOTE: You can decorate with colored sugars or sprinkles or even place a nut or raisin in the center of the cookie before baking or frost after cooling.
