- 1 large onion (chopped)
- 1 red bell pepper (chopped, seeds and ribs removed)
- 3 tablespoons light brown sugar (packed)
- 2 tablespoons Montreal Steak Seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 15 ounce can tomato sauce
- 5 tablespoons tomato paste ((3 ounces))
- 6 toasted buns or rolls for serving
- 1 large sweet onion ( like Vidalia, halved and thin sliced)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper ((optional))
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying
