The following ingredients have 9 Servings

  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef (90-95% fat)
  • 1 large onion (chopped)
  • 1 red bell pepper (chopped, seeds and ribs removed)
  • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tablespoons Montreal Steak Seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 15 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 5 tablespoons tomato paste ((3 ounces))
  • 6 toasted buns or rolls for serving
  • 1 large sweet onion ( like Vidalia, halved and thin sliced)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper ((optional))
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
