Ingredients
The following ingredients have 5 Servings
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil (canola, vegetable, corn), divided
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, plus additional softened butter for the baking pan
- 2 cups sliced sweet onion
- 6 hoagie rolls, or other soft rolls
- 1-1/2 pounds ground beef (or meatloaf mix)
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup finely minced bell pepper
- 1 teaspoon onion salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon Creole or Cajun seasoning, or to taste
- 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 tablespoon Creole or brown mustard
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed
Instruction
- Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil and the butter in a cast iron skillet. Add the onion and cook over medium high, stirring regularly, for about 5 minutes or until softened.
- Reduce heat to medium and continue cooking, stirring regularly, until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion; set aside.
- Meanwhile, combine beef with patty ingredients; shape into 6 oval burgers.
- Add additional oil as needed to skillet and turn the heat to medium high. Place patties into the same skillet, preparing in batches as needed, and cook until the patties are well browned on the underside, and cooked through.
- Flip, scatter onions on top of each patty and top with a slice of cheese. Cover skillet, remove from heat and set aside.
- While the patties are cooking, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Generously butter a rimmed baking sheet. Place the bottom of each hoagie roll on the baking sheet and transfer a meat patty to each bottom. Spoon sauce evenly between each patty.
- Add top of roll and wrap the baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place into the oven and bake for 30 minutes.
- To crisp up the rolls, uncover and return to oven for about 3 to 4 minutes, or to desired crispness.
