Ingredients

The following ingredients have 20 Servings
  • 1 2/3 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 2/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/2 c. butter flavored shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • dash of salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instruction

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 9 x 13 inch pan and set aside. 
  • In a mixing bowl beat together all ingredients on low, for 30 seconds, scraping bowl as needed. Continue to beat on high speed for 3 additional minutes. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until cake tests done (insert toothpick into center and it should be clean when pulled out).
  • Remove cake from oven and cool. 
  • Meanwhile to prepare frosting, mix all frosting ingredients, except vanilla, in a medium size saucepan. Cook and stir until it comes to a rolling boil. Boil for 1 minute while stirring. 
  • Remove from heat and cool. 
  • Add 1 tsp vanilla. Beat with hand mixer until spreading consistency (smooth and thick). Spread over prepared cake. 
  • Store in air tight container 2-3 days.
