Ingredients

The following ingredients have 12 Servings
  • 3 1/2 cups walnuts (chopped)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups ground or chopped almonds
  • 2 cups butter (melted - reserve 2 tablespoons for brushing the dough.)
  • 40 sheets filo pastry (thawed)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • juice and zest of 1 lemon
  • melted chocolate for garnish (optional)
  • ground almonds for garnish (optional)

Instruction

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease 9 by 13 inches pan and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl combine 3½ cups chopped walnuts and 1 cup of powdered sugar. In a different bowl combine 1½ cup ground almonds and 2 cups of butter minus 2 tablespoons.
  • Place your 2 filo sheets into a pan (make sure you cover the rest of the filo pastry with a towel to prevent from getting dry). Brush about 2 tablespoons of almond and butter mixture over the pastry sheet. Repeat this step total of 5 times. Now spread half of the walnut mixture over 11th filo sheet.
  • Place another 2 filo sheets on top of the walnut mixture, then brush 2 tablespoons of almond mixture. Repeat total of 5 times.
  • Spread the rest of the walnut mixture, gently pressing on the dough. Place another 2 filo sheets on top and brush 2 tablespoons of almond mixture. Repeat this step total of 5 times. Place the last 8 filo sheets on top.
  • Brush 2 tablespoons of butter that you reserved over the last filo sheets. Using a knife cut the Baklava into small diamond shapes.
  • Bake Baklava for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes reduce the heat to 275F and cook for 2 more hours. After it's done baking let it cool.
